A MAN is fighting for his life after a fire at a nightclub in the Midlands.

The man suffered serious burns after the blaze broke out at Desire in Hanley, Staffs., in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he remains in a critical condition, the Stoke Sentinel reports.

Staffordshire Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.

A spokesman said: "There were reports of a fire around 3.55am on the August 5.

"There was a small fire at the venue and a man was unfortunately inside and suffered serious burns as a result of the incident.

"The man was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham as they have a specialist burns unit. His condition is critical.

"We investigated the scene alongside the Fire Service, but identified very early on that there was no criminal element to the incident."
